Realtime Roads is a prototype procedural driving environment built for virtual production, created by Morgan Skillicorn as the capstone MSc project in Technical Art & VFX at Abertay University. Developed entirely in Unreal Engine with custom C++ tools, it combines the engine’s native PCG system with a custom Procedural Mesh Component terrain to stream seamless straight-road sections in real time. Designed for nDisplay and tested in Abertay’s CoSTAR Realtime Lab, it gives crews the freedom to adjust terrain, lighting, and scene details on the day, rather than relying on fixed 2D plates. Planned Houdini workflows will be used to generate additional procedural assets, adding variety and depth to environments. While still in its MVP stage, the project shows how procedural systems can bring more flexibility, speed, and creative control to on-set vehicle process work.
